In 1976 Tom Arens was one of if not the first breeder in Indiana to introduce breeding of thoroughbred stallions on quarter mares to increase their size, stamina, speed and conformation. The first Thoroughbred stallion Tom used for this cross was "Uncle Jud", the speedy stakes placed son of Andrea. Uncle Jud's dam was the superior race mare "Speedy Page" and her dam, "First Page" was the winner of the Kentucky Oaks. In 1983 Tom Arens brought to Indiana to stand at stud the Stakes winning and producing thoroughbred stallion "REVERSE". REVERSE, by sire of sires "TURN TO" and out of the "BULL LEA" mare "Miss Grundy" is probably the best stallion to ever stand in Indiana. REVERSE'S progeny earnings well surpassed $7 million dollars. Tom Arens father, John C. Arens was especially instrumental in his involvement in the horse industry. John C. Arens was a life long horseman who as a young man trained Standardbred horses. Throughout his life John was one of the most prominent and well-loved horse traders in the country. Tom remembered well the Saturday mornings when many horse loving people would come to his home and sit at the kitchen table just to listen to his father tell the numerous stories of his life with horses. Although Tom at 17 years of age lost his father to a heart attack he still continues his fathers love and interests in the horse industry. |
